Why your bike shouldn't go in the moving truck
Moving companies move household goods. A performance bike is a precision instrument. Here is what goes wrong:
- Shifting cargo. Furniture slides during transit. A carbon frame pinned between a dresser and a stack of boxes can crack, flex, or get scratched in ways you will not notice until your first ride.
- No bike-specific packaging. Movers reach for moving blankets, not bike padding. Derailleurs get bent. Disc rotors warp. Handlebars twist into the top tube. The damage is cosmetic at best, structural at worst.
- Cover by weight, not by value. A moving company settles damage on the weight of what it carries, not on what the item is worth. A €4,000 road bike that weighs 8 kg is treated as 8 kg of household goods, so a cracked frame pays out at the same rate as 8 kg of crockery. Read the liability clause in the contract before you hand a bike to a mover.
- Timing. Moving companies batch shipments. Your furniture might take two or three weeks to arrive on a cross-border move, and your bike is stuck in the same timeline. Meanwhile you are in a new city with no way to ride.
- No tracking. Most moving companies give you a delivery window measured in days, sometimes weeks. You have no idea where your bike is until the truck shows up.
How to ship your bike with buycycle when you move
1. Get a quote before your move date
Enter the postal code you are leaving and the one you are moving to, pick a box size, and get a fixed price. You can book weeks ahead and set the pickup around your actual move date. Most riders time it so the bike arrives within a day or two of when they do.
2. Pack your bike
Order a pre-sized bike box during checkout and we deliver it to your current address before the pickup date. We dispatch boxes 2-3 working days after you order, so leave a few days between the order and the pickup. Three sizes cover most road, gravel, and mountain bikes:
- Extra-small (114 x 30 x 76 cm) for frames, wheels, and smaller components
- Small (149 x 24 x 76 cm) for most road and gravel bikes
- Medium (149 x 31 x 84 cm) for most mountain bikes and larger frames
Remove the pedals, front wheel, and handlebars. Wrap the frame, fork, and derailleur individually. On carbon bikes, pay extra attention to the chainstays and seatstays. 3. Schedule pickup at your old address
Pick a date and a time window, and the carrier comes to your door. That helps during a move, when you are already juggling movers, key handovers, and a hundred other things. Your bike is collected separately, on your terms.
4. Track your bike to your new home
Your dashboard tracks the box live from pickup to delivery, so you know when your bike will reach the new address. No guessing, and no calling a moving company for vague updates.
5. Delivery at your new address
Most shipments arrive within 2-7 working days of pickup. In rare cases it can take up to 14 working days. The estimate for your exact route, based on past shipments on it, is shown when you book. You sign at delivery, so check the box before you sign. If there is visible damage, ask the carrier to note it on the spot.
How much does it cost to ship a bike when moving?
Pricing is fixed and route-based. Domestic routes inside one country start at €59, and cross-border European routes start at €75. The number you see at checkout is the number you pay. A moving company will usually add a special handling surcharge of €100 to €200 for a bicycle, and that buys you a fraction of the protection.
Protecting a high-value bike during your move
Every shipment includes standard carrier liability. On European road routes that liability is capped at €10 per kilogram of shipment weight, which for a performance bike is rarely enough. Add Premium Protection at checkout: 1.4% of the declared market value for private senders, 0.7% for commercial senders, plus a flat €5 per bike, with a €250 minimum declared value and cover up to €6,000 per bike. Declare the value of each bike, not the value of the whole order. If something goes wrong, contact support within 48 hours of delivery.
Moving with multiple bikes
Serious riders often own more than one bike: a road bike, a gravel bike, a winter trainer, maybe a mountain bike. You can add up to 8 bikes to a single order. Each bike travels as its own shipment with its own tracking link, and bikes booked together are collected and delivered on the same route on the same pickup date, so you are not waiting in for several separate collections. One booking covers one route, so if your bikes need different pickup dates or different destinations, book them separately.
Tips for shipping your bike during a move
- Book early. You know your move date, so get a quote and schedule the pickup as soon as the new address is confirmed. Last-minute bookings in peak moving season, which is summer, leave you with tighter pickup windows.
- Time the delivery. Schedule the bike to arrive a day or two after you do, so you are there to receive it and have somewhere to put it. Carriers do not store bikes for you.
- Photograph everything before packing. Take detailed photos of the frame, groupset, wheels, and any marks that are already there. Moving is chaotic. If something happens, you want documentation from before the bike was packed.
- Remove accessories. Computers, lights, bottles, saddle bags, pumps: ship those with your regular belongings. The box is for the bike, and nothing loose belongs in it, least of all batteries or other electronics.
- Carbon bikes: protect the frame. Wrap the frame tubes individually with foam or pipe insulation. Carbon does not dent like aluminium, it cracks, and those cracks can stay invisible until they fail.
